Waiting on the LORD

Most of the devotionals I've heard on Waiting on the LORD have been about a passive "waiting". There are MANY verses that mention waiting that do sound very passive, but look with me now at God's Word...at the Hebrew & Greek meaning of
Wait, Waited, & WAITING.
I truly believe you'll see that waiting is meant to be a VERY ACTIVE process, not the "lah dee dah", twiddling-your-thumbs, biding-your-time type waiting the term itself brings to mind....

Sounds simple, doesn't it?
Think about it though...how many of us ENJOY "waiting"?
Waiting for someone's plane to arrive at the airport.
Waiting for that all-important letter to arrive in the mail.
Waiting for Mr. Wonderful (or MRS. Wonderful, guys!) to come into your life.
Waiting for your baby's DUE DATE to roll around...
    while you...ahem...roll around.... *_*
No, waiting is neither simple nor NATURAL for the INSTA-MATIC, DRIVE-THRU mentality of today. So, how exactly are we SUPPOSED to "wait" according to Scripture?

Psalm 37:7 "Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him...."
...hope, trust, wait carefully (patiently)

PATIENTLY...oh dear! We all want PATIENCE...NOW... *_*

Psalm 62:1 "Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from Him cometh my salvation."
quiet, trust:--silence, silent, waiteth

Psalm 62:5 "My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him."
to be astonished, to stop; to forbear, hold peace, quiet self,
rest, be silent, keep silence, be (stand) still, tarry

QUIETLY, CALMLY, even SILENTLY. And I just love this next verse...our precious Heavenly Father is waiting for us:

Isaiah 30:18 "And therefore will the LORD wait, that He may be gracious unto you,and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for Him."
to adhere to, hence to await:--long, tarry, wait.

Thoughts on ACTIVE "waiting" first came to me when I was working at a Christian Camp as a waitress...talk about ACTIVE!!!!
Waiting on tables, no, PEOPLE. Actively serving, quietly, faithfully...and hopefully, expectantly *_* Hoping and expecting to provide an efficient, friendly atmosphere for the campers, sponsors, and staff!

Psalm 123:2 "Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden ("maid") unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that He have mercy upon us."

Like a servant seeking to please his master, we should be good servants WAITING ON THE LORD!!!

I found it interesting that one of the most often seen uses of "wait" in the Bible is used as "lie in wait", as in an ambush, ready to POUNCE! (35x!) To lurk.... Obviously, that is not what is meant by waiting on the LORD *_* And it is not what a good "waiter" or "waitress" should be doing, either, is it?

Many of the uses of wait were in verses referring to the priests who waited on God in the temple (Numbers 3:10, 8:24; II Chronicles 13:10). To attend...serve.... Now we're getting somewhere! Do you remember all the particular things the priests had to do in the temple? THEY had to remember...or in some cases, they were struck dead for doing it wrong, with the wrong spirit!! WOW...makes you think.... They had to prepare themselves both physically, in their special priestly garments, and spiritually for waiting on God.

No doubt every one of you reading this have had a waitress or waiter at some point in your life who was dishevelled and/or distracted...like serving you was an after-thought.
Was that pleasing?
If they messed up your order or were just plain slow, or they were busy chatting with a buddy at the next table or on the phone, did it bother you? How much more should we as Christians be careful about how we serve GOD???

Like the priests of Old Testament times, we should dress carefully:
physically, be clean...
the old saying cleanliness is next to godliness rings true in many ways:
pure, spotless, white as snow all refer to divine characteristics!
We should be an example of a believer and wear what pertains to our gender (Deuteronomy 22:5). We should LOOK like a CHRISTIAN when we are out in public. Ladies, NOBODY should EVER mistake you for a man, even from a distance! Gentlemen, NOBODY should ever mistake you for a WOMAN, even from a distance!
spiritually, Ephesians 6:10-17 is a great wardrobe to PUT ON daily *_*

In Acts 1:4 & 5 we are reminded that Jesus told His followers to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father/the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
to persevere, be constantly diligent, or (in a place) to attend assiduously...
to adhere closely to (as a servitor):--attend (give self) continually (upon),
continue (in, instant in, with), wait on (continually).

Not very passive-sounding "waiting", hunh? So how are we to WAIT?

All day long!
Psalm 15:5 "Lead me..., teach me...; on Thee do I wait all the day."
to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).

As an example to fellow believers:
Psalm 52:9 "I will praise Thee for ever, because Thou hast done it: and I will wait on Thy name; for it is good before Thy saints."
to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).

For a defence from the enemy:
Psalm 59:9 "Because of his (the heathen's) strength will I wait upon Thee: for God is my defence."
take heed, be circumspect, watch

KNOWING that the God of our salvation will hear us:
Psalm 40:1 "I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry."
to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).

Micah 7:7 "Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me."
to wait...to be patient, hope....

With His Word giving us HOPE:
Psalm 130:5 "I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in His word do I hope."
to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).

Receiving STRENGTH for further service for our waiting:
Isaiah 40:31 "But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength:  they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).

That when we look back, we will be GLAD we waited on Him:
Isaiah 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us; this is the LORD; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation."
to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).

Isaiah 64:4 "For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside Thee, what He hath prepared for Him that waiteth for Him."
long, tarry, wait

Again, WOW...He even tells us the "tip" we will receive is indescribable!!!!!!

Lamentations 3:25&26 "The LORD is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him.
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD."
1. to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).
2. still, silent

Hosea 12:6 "Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually."
to expect:--gather (together), look, patiently, tarry, wait (for, on, upon).

Romans 8:25 "But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it."
to expect fully:--look (wait) for.

Job 14:14 "If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait til my change come." WOW!!!
to wait...to be patient, hope....

I Thessalonians 1:10 "...to wait for His Son from heaven, Whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come."
to await:--wait for

I Corinthians 1:7 "...waiting for the coming of our LORD Jesus Christ."
to expect fully:--look, wait for

Now THAT is something well-worth the WAIT!

Dear friends, let me encourage you to wait on the LORD. Wherever you are in life TODAY, NOW...keep serving Him with your whole being. Be the best Waiter or Waitress you can be for HIM *_*

Psalm 27:14 "Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD."
