The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20: 1-17

1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Look back at verse one. "God spake...." These are commandments, only ten of the many found in the books of the law--the Pentateuch--the first five books of the Holy Scriptures. We are NOT saved by obedience to these laws, but we should know them and seek to obey them since God gave them!

There was a problem with this in the early church which both Peter and Paul addressed. The church is not "saved by works". Was Israel? The faith chapter in Hebrews mentions Old Testament saint after Old Testament saint, and prefaces each with the precious phrase, "by faith...". Hebrews also reminds saved Jews and Gentiles alike in chapter ten and verse four:

"For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins."

Rather strong words, but that means that the believers in the Old Testament were looking forward in faith to the Lamb of God Who would come, Jesus Christ the Son of God...God with us. Those Old Testament sacrifices were not what took their sins away. Old Testament sacrifices were a picture of that perfect sacrifice to come, the offering up of the Lamb of God on Passover on the cross of Calvary, hallelujah!

The Bible...all scripture...Old and New Testaments.... It all fits together in such a perfect, holy way. But in neither the Old or New Testament was any man spiritually saved by his own good works or adherance to the law.

Ephesians 2:8 & 9, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Many times in Scripture, the law is referred to as "The law of Moses". But that is not because he came up with them *_* Truly, they are commonly called this because God gave them to Moses at Mount Sinai. Look again at the first verse. These are not Moses' personal opinions for holy living. These are ten of the commandments given by God Almighty to His chosen people.

It concerns me when people, even well-meaning Christians, write off the ten commandments and the rest of the law...sometimes even the whole Old Testament. Keeping in mind that the Apostle Paul tells us in the book of Romans chapter six:
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

The Apostle Paul calls the law his "schoolmaster", which brought him to though saving faith is the graduation, amen!!! But when we have faith, Paul goes on to tell the church at Galatia, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. Does that mean that we are to forget and forsake everything we've been taught? No, of course not. Or as Paul put it, God forbid!

How are we going to know what we should and shouldn't do without God's law giving us our boundaries? Oh, we have a solution...make up our own laws! But that is called "doing that which is right in our own eyes", and it just doesn't work...not if we are desirous of righteous judgment. Because of "our own laws", it is "legal" to slaughter unborn children in of many legalized attrocities that our country will be accountable to God for, I must add. We MUST have a standard. As a Christian, that standard is God's Word!

The Apostle Paul, who is known as the Apostle to the Gentiles and the Apostle of Grace, also had this to say to Timothy:

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

I remember in high school taking a Bible test after having memorized that particular passage. One of the questions was "How much of the Bible is inspired by God?" I distinctly remember the teacher telling us after the test that one of the students answered, "About half of it". (Sorry, Valerie!!) But isn't that the way we act? If we keyhole passages to whom they were given or to whom they were spoken, making the law for the children of Israel, the epistles for the early church, et cetera, none of God's Word would be for us! Even John 3:16 would only be for Nicodemus!

Please keep this in mind as you search the Scriptures. God's Word is GOD'S WORD to us...from cover to cover! If we want to be wise unto salvation, we must understand God's heart. We must learn what He tells us in His Word!

Joshua 1:8
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

"Did You Know?
As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the US Supreme Court, you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers. Each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal is Moses, and he is holding the Ten Commandments!

As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door.

As you sit inside the courtroom, you can see on the wall, right above where the Supreme Court judges sit, a display of the Ten Commandments!

There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington, DC

James Madison, the fourth president of the United States of America who is known as "The Father of Our Constitution" made the following statement:
"We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

Patrick Henry, patriot and Founding Father of our country said:
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ".

Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777.

Fifty-two of the 55 founders of the Constitution were members of the established orthodox churches in the colonies.

Thomas Jefferson worried that the Courts would overstep their authority and instead of interpreting the law would begin making oligarchy...the rule of few over many.

The very first Supreme Court Justice, John Jay, said:
"Americans should select and prefer Christians as their rulers."

How, then, have we gotten to the point that everything Bible-based we have done for 230 years in this country is now suddenly wrong and unconstitutional? THINK ABOUT IT."

Don't be a "pick and chooser", picking and choosing what parts of Scripture you want to believe. You can't claim the promised blessings if you aren't willing to be an obedient child! And remember Jesus' words, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." How shall we keep them if we don't know them? How shall we know them if we don't read them? How shall we read them if we never open our Bible?

Matthew 5:18, Jesus said, "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."
